Hush Shutter prefinished aluminium door jambs

Company: Designer Aluminium

Hush Shutter prefinished aluminium door jambs are the answer to the high traffic and rigours of a school environment. Hush Shutter are produced by leading NZ extruders and are normally 6063 – T5 alloy. Hush Shutter being powder-coated aluminium can withstand more knocks and bangs than conventional timber jambs and architraves. Powder-coating in any standard or premium colour is available, with architraves in a different colour if required.  All jambs are fitted with mohair wool pile, giving quieter and softer closing. Glazing over-lights and sidelights can be easily incorporated up to 10mm thick.

The new Westmount School – Hawkes Bay Campus (pictured) recently chose Hush Shutter for the internal door frames, including borrowed lights, and it is proving to be very successful and extremely attractive.

We recommend Hush Shutter for all education situations from kindergarten to college. Hush Shutter is also ideal for retail, office, institutional and healthcare situations.

Reduce Noise and Add Style in Ceiling Design with Acoustic Plus, Sound Absorbing Cloud Panels

Company: Ecoplus Systems

Acoustic Plus sound absorbing cloud panels provide an effective and immediate solution for a busy Central Otago Café.

Nichol’s Garden Cafe is one of Central Otago’s most popular stop-off points, offering locals and tourists award-winning dining amid beautiful, idyllic surroundings.

Design elements within the Cromwell cafe include: pitched timber ceilings, polished concrete floors, granite surfaces and substantial glazing. Unfortunately none of these materials provide sound absorption and when the cafe gets busy (and it usually is) the noise and reverberation is almost unbearable.

Sixteen sound absorbing cloud panels were installed into Nichols Garden Cafe. It only took four hours to complete and the results have been effective and immediate. The owners report a substantial reduction in noise reverberation and positive comments from customers and staff. They all agree the panels make quite a stunning design feature as well.

Acoustic Plus sound absorbing cloud panels are pre-finished and ready to install. Hardened and painted edges eliminate the need for unsightly framing and chrome-plated adjustable fixing kits make installation fast and easy. The panels can also be glue-fixed directly to the ceiling and can even be wrapped in selected fabric for decorative effect.

  • Quick and easy to install
  • Installation kits available
  • No framing required

Voted the best floor in New Zealand

Company: Firth Industries

The ASB Building on the North Wharf on Auckland’s ‘Tank Farm’ is the new home to 1100 ASB Bank staff and is the talk of the town.

“We have been involved in this building with the architects from the start which included significant technical input to create the black polished floor with Jason Torbet and his team from Polished Concrete Ltd who produced a magnificent finish,” says Bernice Cumming, Architectural Manager for Firth. “We were really pleased to see that Jason and his team won Best Commercial Floor at the recent Concrete Services Polished Concrete Awards knowing the work that went into getting the mixes and colour constancy right.”

When construction first began the designers wanted the concrete to have a high-grade, smooth finish for everything from the columns to the beams. Firth was able to work with the customer to develop a mix that proved to be exactly what the designers required.

When it came to the finishing touches to the building Fletchers (the building contractors) were after a polished floor, finished to a high spec, to highlight the wonderful features the building has on offer. A number of meetings were held over the design of the concrete and the methodology for the placement and polishing of the floor. “It wasn’t just about getting the concrete right,” says Rob McKinnon, Materials Manager – Northern for Firth. “It was about getting all the elements from all the parties right.”

Testing and trial mixes were carried out and test slabs put down. “The stockpiles of materials were ‘ring-fenced’ so as to ensure uniformity of product over the number of pours that would be required,” adds Rob.

The result is a spectacular floor that showcases the wonderful design elements of this building and is a credit to all that were involved in its construction.

Knauf Plasterboard now BRANZ Appraised

Company: Knauf Plasterboard

New Zealand’s building industry now has a BRANZ Appraised choice when it comes to plasterboard, with global leader Knauf receiving the organisation’s approval.

One of the leading innovators and largest manufacturers of plasterboard and associated products in the world, Knauf has been awarded BRANZ Appraisals for its Wet Area Systems and Bracing Systems.

Specifically for the New Zealand building industry, Knauf has developed a user-friendly and industry-leading bracing calculator as part of the BRANZ Bracing System Appraisal process. Announced at an industry function in Auckland today, the Knauf Bracing Calculator is available to the New Zealand building industry free of charge from its website

“Since our BRANZ Bracing System Appraisal was issued, feedback from the market has been incredibly positive and humbling. It has really validated all our hard work to date,” says John Russ, New Zealand Sales Manager for Knauf Plasterboard.

“The level of interest and enquiry from the market is growing every day at a rate we are simply thrilled about.

“The high level of interest shows the New Zealand building industry is most definitely interested in doing things differently and looking to global innovators and manufacturers for inspiration and materials if it gets the client a better result,” says John.

FSH now has a complete family of low current draw locking solutions in its EcoLine range. These include the EcoLock VE1260, a drop/swingbolt.

Company: National Fire & Security Limited

POWER draw in access control systems isn’t something installers and end users think about but it’s something that needs to be taken into account. A large access control solution has a considerable collective power draw, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. This is because electric locks must be constantly powered to retain a seal.

In developing its EcoLine, FSH directly targets sleeping power draw, slashing it by up to 5 times. When extrapolated across several hundred or several thousand access controlled doors, the ongoing savings provided by these locks over their long lifetimes are likely to pay for their purchase.

“We’ve put a lot of effort into developing this range and it really does make a difference to the power draw of an entire access control system,” says FSH MD, Trevor Mackle.

The star product in the lineup is EcoLock VE1260, a high security motorised drop bolt which also features pre-load/side load resistance capability of 35kg. According to Mackle, this locking device is similar to the Assa Abloy TRIMEC V-Lock but he says it’s significantly advanced.

The EcoLock VE1260 is durability tested to 900,000 cycles and also has that multi-voltage capability. In this case, it can handle anything from 11-30VDC. There’s a holding strength of 1000kg, a 5-year warranty, full monitoring, including a reed switch for door position, and, last but not least, there’s an outstanding sleep mode current draw of less than 15mA@12V DC. The device also has optional locking plates to pull in doors with misalignment of up to 12mm.

“We’ve put a lot of effort into developing this range and it really does make a difference to the power draw of an entire access control system”

Experience the colours of New Zealand with the COLORSTEEL® ARCHITECTURALSERIES

The Panel

New Zealand Steel has released an exciting palette of seven new colours.

The new palette was developed by a panel of eleven of New Zealand’s foremost architects and designers. The ArchitecturalSeries is a contemporary take on natural colours, providing the freedom to design and create in even the most diverse of environments. New Zealand Steel wants to make it as simple as possible for architects to incorporate a distinctly local hue into their designs.

As with the original COLORSTEEL® colours launched by New Zealand Steel in 1982, Di Lucas, from Lucas and Associates landscape architects, has once again helped to name the new colours. Each colour’s name represents a unique aspect of New Zealand’s landscape allowing the experiential elements of each colour to come to mind.

With the launch of the ArchitecturalSeries New Zealand Steel believes specifiers now, more than ever, will be able to strongly express the inherent structural and natural beauty of New Zealand.
