Method – Open plan recycling for the modern office

2.Method packaging

Company: Method Recycling

Corporate workplaces are changing, companies place a higher value on collaboration, innovation and culture. Sustainability ranks high on the agenda and office place recycling forms an important part of many companies’ sustainability goals.

Method saw an opportunity to re-think office place recycling, developing an open-plan recycling station that engages individual users to consciously sort their waste and encourages an organisation-wide culture of recycling.

Rather than a wheelie bin in the corner; Method wanted a bin to fit in with the aesthetic of the modern office. After two years of research and development method created a bin that organisations are proud to have in their workspace –

Method bin features:

  • awarded a Bronze ar the NZ Designers Institute best awards 2015
  • promotes sustainable culture through visibility, bins aren’t hidden away
  • provides clear labeling and large intuitive openings to make depositing waste easy
  • lids choices either open or closed (touch to open)
  • free standing and flexible – they can be placed in visible areas where they are most needed
  • waste streams, colours and the number of bins are selected to suit
  • patented bag retention system makes liners easy to replace, keeps them secure and tidy and caters for multiple liner sizes
  • colour palette and form developed to look at home in contemporary, professional offices

Method – helping organisations to proudly promote their environmental policy in the workplace.

Fastwrap Wall Underlay ideal for renovations

Company: Paul Industries

Fastwrap Wall Underlay ticked all the boxes as an easy-to-use and dependable weather-proofing solution in this Waimauku renovation by Logan Architects.

“With renovation projects we try to retain as much existing formwork as we can as this makes sense from both a budget and sustainability perspective” commented Logan Reilly, Director of Logan Architects. “However this does sometimes bring challenges when it comes to the build so we look for products like Fastwrap Wall that are easy for the builder to work with and deliver labour savings.”

The original home was a typical 1970s fibre-light structure, with small spaces and an added wing that was out of proportion with rest of the house. The owners wanted to improve its flow and usability to suit their blended family while achieving an exterior form that sat more comfortably on the lifestyle block location. Outdoor living was important and the new swimming pool was to be a key feature.

The improvements also needed to make the home more marketable so they could be confident of a good return should they decide to sell.

The team from Logan Architects opened-up the interior, removing walls to create larger spaces and a natural flow to two distinct outdoor living areas. Outside, an entry canopy was added, creating a visual transition between the two wings and helping to integrate the disparate roof lines. The team also replaced the old fibre-light cladding with cedar weatherboard, achieving a look more in keeping with the rural setting.

“When we removed the cladding, the original building paper was damaged so we opted for Fastwrap Wall because we knew it would deliver the long-term weather-proofing we were after, even in Waimauku’s rural high wind zone” said Reilly. “The Fastwrap synthetic wraps are great – longer lasting, fire-retardant and easier to work with which is important in a renovation.”

The results of the renovation speak for themselves in a stylish and welcoming home that easily accommodates the demands of a large and busy family.

Achieve Peace of Mind Without Compromising Aesthetics

Company: James Hardie

Whitianga Waterways is a marine based urban development located in the township of Whitianga on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Commencing in 2001, this world class coastal development includes Marlin Waters, a unique retirement village for the early or active retiree. The first three units of this 61 villa village have just been completed and comprise single level 2 or 3 bedroom units with 1 or 2 bathroom options.

Marlin Waters is designed to achieve Lifemark Certification and has met a set of specific design standards to ensure the homes are safe and easy to live in. Selecting the right building materials was critical in achieving a liveable housing design.

The Solution
High impact James Hardie Linea® Weatherboard and HardieSoffit™ were incorporated into the
homes. Peter Abrahamson, Project Manager of Whitianga Waterways, says the decision to use these products was based on past performance and reputation. “James Hardie products are popular in the development and come highly recommended by our suppliers and our designer Dataplan Waikato.”

“The building materials needed to be high quality both inside and out, and suitably robust for the environment,” explains Abrahamson. “Marlin Waters is more a retirement ‘resort’ than a village with its waterfront location and top end amenities.”

Clad with James Hardie Linea Weatherboard and lined with HardieSoffit around the perimeter, the clean and simple white walled villas provide a coastal look appropriate for the marine setting. The Linea Weatherboard also provides a fire resistance rating of up to 90 minutes, which makes it suitable for use on external walls close to boundaries, which is ideal for this application. It enabled the developers to achieve compliance with regard to fire safety requirements and peace of mind for residents without compromising on great aesthetics.

ThermalCrete: a cut above aerated concrete

compilation images web_02

Company: Masons Plastabrick

Hamilton Builder builds his own home with ThermalCrete and the complimentary Masons product line.

ThermalCrete – Masons interlocking wall panel and plaster system is in demand by builders. The superior performance during and after installation makes it a preferable plaster cladding system.

ThermalCrete was also the product of choice for Dan Gujer from Coastal Elite Builders when it came to building his own home. “I first saw the ThermalCrete panels at a trade breakfast and really liked the interlocking system. It has good thermal and sound qualities which was important because my section is on a main road with sometimes heavy traffic, so sound reduction is a key.”

Dan’s building site is situated in a rural setting in the Hamilton region. He has been building homes for 10 years with his company: ‘Coastal Elite Builders’ and worked as a builder from a young age.

“We always wanted a plastered look but weren’t happy with what I had used before. Previously I have used AAC panels but this panel product is better, it has very little wastage and the price was good and worked within our budget.”

Masons is the only company in NZ who can supply all wall products from: DPC, building wrap, window tape to: panel, mesh, plaster, paint and sealant. That means one company holds the warranty in keeping the walls nice and dry. It was an easy decision for Dan to use Masons full product range. “I used their entire system because the products are great, easy to work with and having it come from the one company made sense to us.”
