Company: Allied Concrete

In a building environment with rising costs and increasing technical demands, Allied Concrete has applied their expertise to develop a range of READY Flooring foundations which offer savings without compromising on quality.

A large percentage of buildable ground in New Zealand is considered ‘Good Ground’- a technical classification in NZS3604. Allied Concrete has developed READY Floor which is easy to place, faster to build and proven to work. READY Floor is a BRANZ appraised and CodeMark certified alternative to a traditional 3604 foundation and flooring design. This means it has been tested pre-approved and building consent authorities will accept it as complying with the New Zealand Building Code. You still need to apply for building consent, however the CodeMark means no delays at council.

Not only does READY Floor meet the standards of the building code, it eliminates the need for traditional steel reinforcing resulting in significant savings of 20% or more! READY Floor uses steel fibres that consist of approximately 80% recycled material, compared to standard mesh solutions this allows you to reduce your Co2 emission and energy consumption by up to 12%.

With READY Floor, the reinforcing is loaded directly into the concrete truck at the plant and taken to site ready to pour. READY Floor can be used on any lightly loaded ground slabs when building on ‘good ground’ including:

  • concrete house slabs
  • shops
  • warehouses
  • any lightly loaded concrete floor

Try the cost calculator on www.alliedconcrete.co.nz to see how much you could save compared to using traditional steel reinforcing.

Interior and exterior become one

Company: Firth Industries

When Sharon Spence, Corporate GM Human Resources for Fletcher Building and husband Tony Martin, Opus Architecture – Sharon’s husband and the project’s architect – wanted to create a second living space for their growing teenage family they looked to explore product options from Fletcher Building companies which included designer concrete from Firth.

“Bernice Cumming, Architectural Manager from Firth, had been into our office to update us with what is available in the way of colours, pebble options and finishes for concrete,” said Tony. “We also wanted to exploit the thermal mass properties of concrete so she worked with us on colours and finishes and I have to say we are really happy with the final result.”

“Tony and Sharon’s concrete floor is a special blend of Awatoto pebble – 16m and 10mm with a small amount of fines and Elements – 08 ThunderCloud – for the colour,” says Bernice. “It was then up to Justin Kidd from Total Technical Services Auckland to create these amazing finishes.”

“We polished the internal floor to 3000 grit and applied a mineral based preservation system to enhance and protect the floor,” explains Justin. “For the exterior we lightly scuffed the concrete with a 50 grit resin bond diamond abrasive then acid washed and applied a sealer which makes it easy to clean, whilst maintaining the slip resistance and natural appeal of the concrete.”

In summertime the interior and exterior of Tony and Sharon’s new extension become one with full width sliding doors. The cantilevered steps and patio slab out over the pool give a sense of mass and are visually intriguing. The overall result is a beautiful, functional space for this Auckland family.
